Over the years, I’ve discovered there are three things to really make a family session come together beautifully.
- Lighting: Shooting 1.5 hours before sunset is when the lighting creates a softer glow, flattering all skin tones. It filters beautifully through the trees. There are no harsh shadows or squinting eyes. Many clients worry about their little ones being cranky at an hour so close to bedtime, but typically photos sessions are fun and engaging for little ones and I very rarely struggle to get those happy smiles at sessions with even if it is close to bedtime.
- Clothing: When you piece together your outfits, lay them out on the bed and describe what you see in one word, and that is what your photos will be described as well. For example, bright and bold. Simple and elegant. Floral and feminine. Minimalist and Simple. Sophisticated and refined. What describes your home style and/or personality? What kind of photos do you want to hang on the wall? Your outfits should fit that description. My branding tends to be Simple and Elegant — that is what you see on my website and those are the clothing I have available in the studio wardrobe.
- Connection: I’ve worked really hard to create prompts that create genuine, authentic connection. But I also want you to do what feels natural to you. Snuggles, hugs, kisses, etc. Those are the BEST things to capture and the photos you will treasure the most. I’ll position you in the correct lighting and I want to capture you organically interacting with your little ones
