When I first started photography I was overwhelmed by all the things to learn, but at the same time I was eager to dive right in. The first photography learning book I purchased was Scott Kelby’s Digital Photography Book . I still recommend it to friends who want to get into photography professionally or mommas who just want to learn how to use their digital SLR camera a little better. I loved it because he explains everything in very simple, easy to understand terms. That being said I learned to first edit my photos using Scott Kelby’s recommendation and I will get into that in just a little bit!
There are two programs that photographers use for editing, Photoshop and Lightroom. I tend to favor Photoshop simply because that is the program I learned to edit on. Within Photoshop there is a third program called Camera RAW. Camera RAW allows me to batch edit exposure, white balance, contrast, fill light, etc and then I open my files in Photoshop for a finalizing my edit. Every year my editing has grown more streamlined and refined. I still experiment here and there to see if there is something I can add to my images to make them a little better.
Choosing an editing style is a key component to who I am as a photographer. I love light, airy photos. I love the the timeless, natural feel to them and that is why I’ve gone in that direction with my editing and worked very hard to achieve that specific look.
Here is a family session that demonstrates the light, airy edit that I always strive to achieve. Back-lighting with the sun also helps to achieve this look. Here are a few of my favorites from this recent family session.
