Bringing home a new baby is one of life’s sweetest gifts, but if you’re anything like most of the mamas I work with, you might be wondering how your toddler or older child will adjust to their new role as “big sibling.” And when it comes time for your newborn photo session, you want everyone to feel calm, connected, and maybe even a little excited.
As a family photographer here in Huntsville (and a mama of three), I’ve photographed countless newborn sessions where big brothers and sisters steal the show in the best way. With just a little prep and the right expectations, your family newborn session can be a beautiful memory for everyone – not just baby.
Here are a few gentle, tried-and-true tips to help prepare siblings so that their smiles are real, their arms are loving, and their little hearts feel seen.

1. Talk About the Session Ahead of Time
A few days before your newborn photo session, start mentioning it casually in conversation. Share that Mrs. Jessica (or your photographer’s name) will be coming to take special pictures of the whole family. Let them know they’ll get to snuggle their baby, wear a cozy outfit, and maybe even sit in Mommy or Daddy’s lap for a few.
When toddlers know what to expect, they perform better. Keep your words simple and upbeat:
“We’re going to take some special pictures with our new baby. You’ll get to help and maybe even get a photo all by yourself!”

2. Let Them Be Involved
Kids love to feel helpful. If they’re old enough, you can let them help pick their outfit from options you’ve already approved or let them choose a small toy to bring (even if it doesn’t make it into the actual photos). Involving them helps build cooperation without pressure.
During the session, I often give little “jobs” like:
- Holding baby’s hand
- Giggling with Mommy
- Sitting next to baby on the bed or blanket
These prompts invite genuine smiles and create space for real connection, not forced poses.

3. Time It Right
We’ll plan your newborn photos with your whole family’s routine in mind. If you know your toddler’s best time of day (post-nap, post-snack), let’s use that window. Full bellies and rested hearts make for peaceful, happy moments, especially with little ones.
I always start the session with sibling and family photos so toddlers can join in early and then be free to play or relax once their part is done.

4. Set Gentle Expectations
If your child doesn’t want to sit still, that’s okay. If they only want to kiss baby for half a second and then run off to play, that’s also okay. Newborn photography is about the in-between moments, not perfection.
One of the things I share with all families is that you don’t need your children to be perfectly behaved. You just need to show up together. I’ll take care of the rest. The beauty always finds its way through.

5. Celebrate Them, Too
Welcoming a new baby can feel big and a little confusing for older siblings. Giving them extra snuggles during your session or letting them have a few photos on their own can help them feel just as special as their new little brother or sister.
You might even bring a small treat or plan a simple reward after the session – a park visit or their favorite snack. It helps make the whole experience feel positive and fun.

Final Thoughts on Family Newborn Sessions
Newborn photos are more than just documenting those tiny fingers and toes. They’re about remembering how it felt to welcome your baby into your growing family. Including older siblings with love, patience, and flexibility allows everyone to be part of the story in their own beautiful way.
