I’m the kinda person that LOVES all the seasons. As a photographer for the past 7 years, I’ve experienced the benefits of photographing in each of the seasons. I’m going to highlight those benefits below, so you can make the best decision on when to schedule your next family session.
Fall – This is everyone’s favorite season to schedule. Everyone is getting back from their summer vacation, the leaves are changing to beautiful yellow, oranges, and red. It is just in time to get your yearly Christmas card photos. The sun is starting to set a little earlier this time of year, so sessions take place around 5:00 to 6:00 for best lighting. This usually works for the little ones. The downside to the fall, is it is every family photographer’s busiest season, so you typically need to book early to reserve a session. If you book, too late in the fall, you risk an early snow fall and possibly no leaves on the trees. If you desire a fall session, I recommend scheduling early with your photographer for the months of September/early October.

Winter – The mountains are snow covered which looks amazing in the photos! However, it is cold for little ones. I would recommend a Winter session for a family with older children who can wear cute winter hats and gloves. I also think a Winter maternity sessions can be beautiful if you can tough the cold. I wouldn’t recommend Winter sessions for family’s with little ones 1 Month-5 Years. They just aren’t happy in the cold for very long. Sessions take place around 3:00 which is a fun early time!

Spring – I enjoy photographing in late Spring because the trees are starting to get their leaves and the flowers are starting to bloom. Too early in Spring and everything looks too brown and dead. The blooms come and go very quickly, so it is hard to schedule too far in advance for them, but if you are more flexible, you can get them with your photos. Spring sessions, like fall sessions, are scheduled around 5:00-6:00 pm, which isn’t too late for little ones. The weather is very unpredictable in Colorado in the Spring – it’s warm one day, cold the next day, and super windy in between. Being flexible about moving your session for the weather is important

Summer – Summer is my favorite time to photograph! The weather is very consistent. It typically cooled off by the time of our session. The trees are full and filter the light beautifully. We get the most amazing sunsets in the summertime. We sometimes get beautiful flowers in the fields and I LOVE the tall grasses! The only downside to summer sessions is the late evening sessions. The sun typically sets at 9:00 PM, so we start at 7:00 PM or later. This can be hard for little ones who don’t do well after their bedtime. If you have older children or children with later bedtimes, I would highly recommend a summer session.
