Preparing a nursery is one of those sweet moments in early motherhood that blends excitement with a little overwhelm. You want a space that’s calming, beautiful, and full of love, but also one that works for those 2 a.m. feedings, endless diaper changes, and first baby giggles.
Over the years, as a mother of three and newborn photographer, I have visited numerous nurseries. Some are minimal and modern, others soft and vintage, all created with so much heart. If you’re just getting started or looking to refresh your current space, here are a few ideas to help you create a nursery that’s both stylish and functional.
1. Start with a Soft, Neutral Foundation
Whites, warm creams, soft greys, and earthy tones give your nursery a peaceful, timeless feel, and they photograph beautifully, too! A light color palette also allows you to add texture and warmth through blankets, rugs, or wall art without feeling too busy.
Bonus tip: Soft walls make those sleepy, middle-of-the-night moments feel extra calming.

2. Choose a Crib That Grows with Baby
Look for cribs that convert into toddler beds later on. These transitional pieces are very useful in addition to being lovely. Many come in neutral finishes like natural wood or matte white, which blend easily with different themes as your baby grows.

3. Invest in a Comfortable Chair (Trust Me)
You’ll spend more time in that glider or rocker than you think – feeding, snuggling, reading board books at bedtime. Choose one that’s not only cute but also supportive and easy to clean (because life with a baby is wonderfully messy).

4. Keep Diaper Essentials Within Arm’s Reach
A well-organized changing area makes all the difference in those early weeks. Use baskets, bins, or drawer dividers to store diapers, wipes, burp cloths, and creams. A simple cart or small dresser can keep everything nearby, so you’re not fumbling in the dark for the diaper rash cream.
Functional tip: Keep a backup outfit tucked close by for those unexpected messes (you’ll thank me later).

5. Add Personal Touches That Tell Your Story
Framed ultrasound photos, a shelf of your favorite childhood books, or a wall quote that makes you tear up every time. It’s these little things that bring your baby’s space to life. Your nursery doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect. It just needs to feel like you.
I especially love seeing family heirlooms incorporated into an old rocking horse, a handmade quilt, or a vintage dresser you’ve painted with love.

6. Create a Small Play and Learning Space
Even in those early months, babies begin soaking in their surroundings. Add a cozy rug, soft floor mirror, and a few high-contrast toys or wooden rattles. You’ll be surprised how quickly tummy time turns into full-on exploring.
This space doesn’t need to be big; just intentional and safe for baby’s early development.

7. Think About Light and Sound
A soft, warm nightlight and a simple sound machine can create a soothing sleep environment for baby (and a little sanity for mama, too). For daytime naps, particularly during those erratic sleep intervals, blackout curtains are also a fantastic purchase.

A Final Thought for New Mamas
Your nursery doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to feel like a place where you and your baby can breathe, bond, and grow together. Whether it’s filled with modern lines or soft florals, what matters most is the love you bring into it.
So give yourself permission to create a space that’s both functional and beautiful, because motherhood deserves a little of both.
